The Unintuitive Universe is a science publication about the moments where solid, published science breaks your intuition. Each essay takes one rock-solid result from physics, biology, perception, or math and leads with the part that sounds impossible — time that runs faster at your head than at your feet, particles with no definite place until you look, a nerve in your neck that detours for no reason at all — and then shows you it has been measured.

The promise is simple: no hype, no “scientists baffled.” The wow comes from the truth itself, cited. If a claim can’t make a smart reader say “that can’t be right” and also survive a fact-check, it doesn’t run.

How it’s made

Every essay here is produced with AI — researched, written, and fact-checked by an automated system under human direction and review. We don’t claim a human wrote them. What we do claim: every factual statement is traceable to published, peer-reviewed science, and we cite it. Find an error? Corrections are welcome, and we post them. The method page describes the process and its limits in more detail.

Reader contributions

Anyone signed in with Google can leave a correction or addition on any essay. Contributions that hold up against the cited science change the essay and credit the contributor; contested or unsupported notes are preserved publicly as reader notes. The mechanics live on the method page.
